Art That Imitates My Life

I often get the question, “are your paintings just based on other paintings?”

My answer? No. Very, very far from that.

Each of my original pieces are actually based on photography; but not just any photograph I can find online. In fact, all of my pieces are based on my OWN photography. From the moose to the mountains, my travels have inspired each piece of my artwork. From the time my uncle gave me my first camera when I was younger, I’ve never stopped taking photographs. Pictures of everything. Every bird, tree, rock, mountain, cloud- every part of nature that I find beautiful has a home somewhere on an SD card, and I’ve learned to transfer them to canvas.

One of my favorite subjects to paint are our national parks and public lands, and the wildlife that inhabit them.

Ever since I was younger, I’ve had the chance to travel to so many beautiful places in our country via road trip. Since then, my dream has always been to pursue art and travel as a career.

My art doesn’t really “mean” anything, like some people believe that it should. Instead, it’s a reflection of the things I find beautiful in life. I think my art inspires people to get outside, to be in nature, and to help keep it beautiful. There’s no deep meaning behind most of it; rather just a feeling. I can’t explain the mountains to you, nor do photographs always do them justice, so for me, painting how they feel is what inspires me.

A lot of people have tried to steer me away from this direction, making comments about “starving artists” or how it’s just “not realistic.”

But I truly have faith that I can continue to grow and expand my business as I practice and improve my skills, and I believe that I can find the right audience that will help me continue to pursue these dreams. I’m not dropping everything in some sort of blind ambition; but I am choosing to continue to move forward with that end goal in mind.
