Getting Out of the “Lukewarm” Phase
As life gets busier, it can be easy to focus less on God.
Reading the Bible seems like it will take too long, Christian music feels repetitive all of a sudden, and you don’t even know what words to pray. Or sometimes you completely forget about all of these things altogether.
I’ll go through ruts where my Bible literally collects dust… and I don’t want that to be the case anymore. So, here are some things that I’m going to do to help keep me away from being “lukewarm” and put me back on fire to learn and know Him better.
1.) Wake up early.
You may be thinking, what does waking up early have to do with God??? Well, to me, morning is the best time to start your walk with God each day. I mean, if you’re in the Word and talking to Him first thing in the morning, it’s going to set your day up for success. If you start your day with Him, you have a better chance of staying alongside Him for the remainder of your day.
2.) Make time for Him on your schedule.
Write it down. Schedule Bible reading time, prayer time, etc. Eventually this will all become habitual, but if it’s not yet, make sure it’s a part of your daily to-do list!
3.) More Christian media.
Not all secular music and books are “bad” per say, but are they drawing you nearer to Him? Probably not. Make sure you’re making smart choices on the movies, shows, music, and books you’re reading. There’s a lot of really awesome Christian music out there for all kinds of tastes too! When I constantly have Christian music playing in my apartment, it’s always reminding me to turn to Him and keeps me feeling closer to Him.
4.) Find a partner to do this with!
Whether it be a spouse, family member, or friend, having someone else walk this journey with you is a great idea. It’s always easier when you have someone to lean on, bounce ideas off of, ask questions, and turn to.
5.) Pray about it.
This seems pretty obvious, but you can pray that God would help you come away from a lukewarm phase. Pray that He would help you to be on fire for Him and want to seek Him more.
Note:
I just finished reading Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis as I’m writing this, and it’s been an eye-opener on how the Devil tries to keep us trapped and away from living up to our fullest potential in Jesus. I highly recommend reading it; you can find it on the apple bookstore or anywhere else :)
